Professionals and independent workers [fr]


Access to certain professions is not authorized unless you are a national from a European Union country (EU). These are lawyers at the Conseil d’Etat and the Cour de Cassation, lawyers at the court of appeal, commissaires priseurs (appraisers-auctioneers), clerks with the commerce tribunals, bailiffs, notaries, judicial administrators and insurance general agents, intellectual property counsels and registered auditors.

Others will need an authorisation from the relevant professional body. These include architects, lawyers, accountants, land surveyors, doctors, dentists, midwives and veterinarians.

Others still must obtain a special authorization and are subject to certain restrictions. These include pharmacists and paramedical professionals.

Finally, some are unregulated. They include, for example, artists who are not salaried, commercial brokers paid by commission, consultants, consulting engineers, experts, translators and interpreters, journalists, independent photographers…

Documents to be provided

Please provide both the original and 2 copies of the documents. All the documents must be submitted in the order below.

The visa section will give you back the original documents.

Document or photocopy missing = incomplete file = high risk of visa refusal.

  • 2 identification photos, in colour, recent (less than three months), original in 35 mm X 45 mm format with clear and uniform background. Photo must be affixed to the form;
  • Original passport (and copy of your passport’s identification page). The passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the end of the stay in France. The visa is made effective by means of a self-adhesive label affixed to one of the pages of the passport;
  • Refugees : RefugeeTravel Document issued in accordance with the 1951 Geneva Convention;
    • Canadian residents with refugees status, even if they have a permanent resident card, must be in possession of this document and present themselves at the consulate at least one month before their travel date.
  • Non Canadian citizens : evidence of your regular status in Canada ;
    • a permanent resident card (photocopy must be recto-verso),
      • IMM 1000 not accepted.
    • or a study permit along with a valid Canadian visa (to ensure the return to Canada),
    • or a work permit along with a valid Canadian visa,
    • or a Canadian visitor’s visa if the holder prove residence over three consecutive months in Canada.
  • A letter indicating the reasons for your application;
  • Supporting evidence of your socio-professional situation (degrees, curriculum vitæ, employment certificate, contracts, registration of companies in Canada, portfolio…) (original + two photocopies);
  • Documentary evidence of your means of livelihood during your stay in France (based on C$1,500/month) (original + two photocopies);
  • Supporting evidence of a residence in France: property deed, residential lease, lodging certificate (recent invoice for water, electricity, gas…) (original + two photocopies);
  • Document proving medical coverage issued, as the case may be, by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) (original + photocopies).


The Consulate reserves the right to require additional supporting evidence.

Filing the documents does not systematically guarantee issuance of a visa. You should not leave your present job, sell your property or commit yourself in any way before receiving your visa.

Fees and timeframes

Application fees (non-refundable): the value of €99 in Canadian currency for long stays payable only by debit card, cash or money orders (exact amount) payable to “consulat de France à Montréal”.

The timeframe for issuing a visa depends on your nationality, even if you are a permanent resident of Canada. Processing time is approximately 30 days.

Attention, you must schedule an appointment in order to submit your application on the Consulate’s website : "Rendez-vous" (in the "Prendre rendez-vous" tab).

Only those persons in possession of the notice to attend will be admitted to the Consulate offices. For security reasons, please be on time.

Before attending, please make sure to bring all the documents indicated on the Consulate Web site that are required to issue the requested visa.

You must submit all original documents, as well as two photocopies of each document.

To avoid penalizing other applicants, if you must cancel your appointment you are strongly requested to do so via the Consulate’s website : "Rendez-vous" (in the "Revoir son rendez-vous" tab).
